Day 47 - August 9 Ferry back to Java
Hi there. Thanks for stopping by today to see how we are doing. In short, we have rounded third base and are headed for home. By that I mean we are now making our way back to Jakarta in preparation to leave Indonesia. We are mostly in travel mode at this stage with each day being an exercise in getting from point A to point B. We do get to see some great scenery and have amazing conversations with people along the way, but we aren't taking any more time to do tourist or sightseeing things.
Today the mission was to get back to Java. We woke up at the AirBnB homestay and had a last look at the mountains of Bali from the roof top patio. Cool sight. Then we headed out with a driver we hired to take us back to the ferry at Gilimanuk. Along the way we got to experience one more time what it is like to be a passenger in a car on a road with no shoulders passing on blind curves into oncoming traffic. Sherri and I have agreed that the most dangerous thing we have done in ten years is riding in cars in Indonesia. Sometimes it is better to just close your eyes ....
Obviously we made it just fine to the ferry, bought our tickets (20,000 total rupiah for the four of us to cross. That is about $1.50 or so .... ) then carried our packs on board and enjoyed the boat ride over. I went over safety procedures with the family again - in case of capsizing, we ditch the packs and stay together. If I can get us one flotation device I will. There are not nearly enough life preservers on these boats so when they go down bad things tend to happen. Again, all went well but I thought I would share some of the safety related thoughts that have gone through my head almost every day for two months over here.
Below is one shot from the ferry on the way over. The sun was bright and the sea an impossible blue. Just awesome. Take care folks, and we hope that you have a great day, wherever you are.
