Day 48 - August 10 Train to Surabaya
Hello again! Today we traveled from Banyuwangi to Surabaya by train. It is was bittersweet as it will be our last train ride in Indonesia for this trip. We have really enjoyed the train service in Indonesia and would encourage you to consider it if you ever travel. Our son, David, LOVES the trains and asks for them all the time. We will have one more train ride before this journey is over, that will be from Boston to Washington DC next week.
The train station in Banyuwangi was almost deserted this morning. We are all the way at the end of Java and most people tell me that the the only reason to come here is to ride the ferry over to Bali. There is not much else in this town to do, unless you head off to see sights outside of the community. Below are pictures of the kids at the train station and Sherri and the kids on the empty train. It did pick up some passengers along the way to Surabaya later in the day.
Our last train ride went well. We have a one night stop over in Surabaya and had planned to take the train back to Jakarta. As it turned out, that train was sold out two weeks ago ... so we are flying back. Just a quick flight from one end of Java to the other.
We are spending the time reflecting upon the trip and where we go from here. I feel we have drawn much closer together in this experience and we have all grown a bit along the way. For me personally, I loved the experience of teaching those kids back in Malang. I would love to get more time to do something like that again in the future.
Take care everyone,
