Day 39 - August 1 Yogjakarta

Day 39 - August 1 Yogjakarta

Howdy folks - this was a day I had been waiting for since we started planning this trip.  We got to visit two incredibly awe inspiring sites today near Yogja.  The first is the largest Buddhist temple in Java that is about 1,200 years old named Borobudur.  You can read more about it here.  The second is Prambanan -a huge Hindu temple just a little bit younger than Borobudur.  You can read more about Prambanan here.

I should mention that we are staying a traditional house via AirBnB in Yogja.  I recommend it very much.  The host, Achmad, speaks excellent English and has been a tremendous help to us in getting oriented.  He has more ideas on great things to do here than we have energy or time to accomplish!  The link to his AirBnB homestay listing is here.

We started out our day with our driver, Eko, meeting us at the homestay and driving out to Borobudur.  It was about an hour drive with plenty of local sights and sounds. At the temple Sarah and David were required to put on sarongs as their shorts did not come past their knees and this is a holy area. This rule is not consistently applied, so you just never know.  Sherri and I have intentionally brought long pants for just this reason.

The climb up the temple was steep but the view was incredible.  Here are a few of our shots from there.  The third shot (with the lady in the red shirt) was a couple of Indonesians who just had to have a picture taken with David.  He was kind enough to let them!

For lunch we found this awesome restaurant called the Patio that looks out on Borobudur.  We had the place to ourselves for most of lunch time.  It was wonderful up on the mountain with the cool breeze.  This was our view:

After lunch we had about a two hour drive to the second temple we wanted to see - Prambanan.  This is a smaller site, but the design is more striking - or at least that is what our resident expert (Sarah) informed us.  We liked them both and were so very happy to visit.  Below are some pictures.  I love the one of Sherri.

That's all for today.  On Wednesday we plan to sleep in and do some shopping in Yogja! We hope you have a great day wherever you are.
